VMware Questions

What is VMware?

VWware is an industry standard server virtualization platform. It is used to host the Research Virtual Machines.

What is the VMware console for?

The VMware console is used to install, configure and manage Virtual Machines.

It allows console access to the Linux operating system installed on it. Imagine it to be like standing in front of a physical server with a monitor plugged in.

It is possible to shutdown or power cycle the Virtual Machine via the VMWare console whether or not you know the root password. Akin to pressing the power button on a physical server.

Who may have access to the vmware console?

IT support staff only. Academics will only have access to their Virtual Machine via the operating system itself, e.g. over SSH.

Detailed info is available in the VMWare Console How-To (login rqd) for IT staff only.
