Dr Richard Bryce (2014 May)

Our research into computational modelling of biomolecular structure and recognition is underpinned by the excellent facilities available within the campus ecosystem for computationally-intensive research.

The CSF provides the flexible computing capacity to handle large-memory quantum chemical calculations as well as large infiniband multicore molecular dynamics simulations of biomolecules in the condensed phase. The high end Nvidia GPU cards on zCSF are also proving to be excellent engines for long timescale molecular dynamics simulations. The large data sets generated from this work utilise the Isilon storage capacity; analysis of simulation data and from our computer-aided molecular design activities benefits from GUI-based interactive work using the iCSF.

When coupled with the first class support and management of these facilities, this integrated environment provides an excellent platform for our diverse computationally-intensive research activities.

The facility [The CSF] presents superb value for money and continues to serve my research group very well, over several years already, which is partially due its excellent management and the way it is built. Its steady and organic growth to its present impressive size is a sign of the health of computing at our University. It delivers for my group and we work with [The RI Team], who are superb.

Prof Jane Worthington (2013 December)

The availability of the computational shared facility (CSF) allows us to perform the computationally intensive analyses that are now common in modern genetic studies. These analyses would otherwise be beyond the capabilities of our local computing hardware. The recent introduction of the interactive-CSF has relieved the need for the ongoing procurement and management of multiple local workstations that are essential for GUI based analyses and development. Integration of these computing platforms with Isilon storage facility provides the secure storage environment to organise research projects with the flexibility to meet our future demands.

The availability of these centralised computing facilities, coupled with the high quality support from the IT Services Research Infrastructure team, has completely changed our working practices and will form the basis of our group’s future research computing infrastructure.
