For example, a simple text-editor named <code>gedit<\/code> is useful when writing jobscripts. By running <code>gedit<\/code> on the Condor login node, any files you load and save will all be on Condor &#8211; no need to upload\/download those files from your PC or laptop.<\/p>\n<p>In both of the above cases you must first log in to Condor with <em>X11 enabled<\/em> using the instructions below.<\/p>\n<h3>MobaXterm on Windows<\/h3>\n<p>Everything is taken care of, you don&#8217;t need to do anything extra. Log in to the CSF as usual using:<\/p>\n<pre>ssh <em>username<\/em>@submitter.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>and then you can run GUI apps such as <code>gedit<\/code> straight away.<\/p>\n<h3>Mac OS-X<\/h3>\n<p>First install <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xquartz.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">XQuartz<\/a> on your Mac and reboot it. Then log in to the CSF using:<\/p>\n<pre>ssh -X <em>username<\/em>@submitter.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\r\n     #\r\n     # UPPERcase X (to <em>enable<\/em> X11 forwarding)\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Check that you can run GUI apps by running <code>gedit<\/code> on the CSF login node.<\/p>\n<h3>Linux<\/h3>\n<p>No extra installs are usually needed. Simply log in to the CSF using:<\/p>\n<pre>ssh -X <em>username<\/em>@submitter.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\r\n     #\r\n     # UPPERcase X (to <em>enable<\/em> X11 forwarding)\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Check that you can run GUI apps by running <code>gedit<\/code> on the Condor login node.<\/p>\n<h2>Checking that GUI apps will run<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have logged in to the CSF using one of the above methods, run the following command on the CSF:<\/p>\n<pre>echo $DISPLAY\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>If everything is OK you should see something like:<\/p>\n<pre>localhost:<em>11<\/em>.0\r\n         #\r\n         # The number at the end can be different\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>If you get nothing displayed then <em>X11<\/em> is NOT enabled and you won&#8217;t be able to open GUI windows. Things to check:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did you use an UPPERcase X in the command: <code>ssh -X <em>username<\/em>@submitter.itservices.manchester.ac.uk<\/code><\/li>\n<li>If on Mac, after installing X-Quartz, did X-Quartz start automatically when you ran the <code>ssh<\/code> command in the terminal window?
