{"id":876,"date":"2019-06-25T12:51:56","date_gmt":"2019-06-25T11:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/htccondor\/?page_id=876"},"modified":"2019-06-25T12:59:54","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T11:59:54","slug":"windows","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/htccondor\/getting-started\/connecting\/windows\/","title":{"rendered":"Logging in from Windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All logins to Condor must be done with an <em>SSH<\/em> (secure shell) app. On Windows we highly recommend the free MobaXterm program, from Mobatek, (installation instructions given below) which provides everything needed to login to Condor, run graphical programs and transfer files. It replaces the separate PuTTY, Xming and WinSCP programs we used to recommend.<\/p>\n<p>Installation of MobaXterm is quick and simple and you <strong>do not<\/strong> require administrator access to your PC (simply download and <em>extract<\/em> a <code>.zip<\/code> file). Please follow the steps below.<\/p>\n<h2>Download and Install MobaXterm<\/h2>\n<p>Please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/mobaxterm.mobatek.net\/download-home-edition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MobaXterm download page<\/a> and download <strong>one<\/strong> of the following packages:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"gaplist\">\n<li>MobaXterm Home Edition (<span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><strong>portable edition<\/strong><\/span>) &#8211; <strong>RECOMMENDED<\/strong> &#8211; a <code>.zip<\/code> file which can be unpacked anywhere <strong>without needing the Administrator password<\/strong> (ideal for your P-Drive for example).\n<ol class=\"gaplist\">\n<li><em>Right-click<\/em> on the downloaded <code>.zip<\/code> file<\/li>\n<li>Select <em>Extract all&#8230; <\/em><br \/>\n(note, you <em>must<\/em> do an Extract all&#8230;, simply double-clicking on the <code>.zip<\/code> file to browse the content will <em>not<\/em> install the software correctly!)<\/li>\n<li>This will create a <code>MobaXterm_v<em>X.Y<\/em><\/code> folder containing the software (the <em>X.Y<\/em> numbers will change depending on the current version downloaded). <strong>Make a note of where this folder is<\/strong> (your Desktop? Your P-Drive? Your <em>Downloads<\/em> folder?)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>MobaXterm Home Edition (<span style=\"color: #00aa00;\"><strong>installer edition<\/strong><\/span>) &#8211; <strong>NOT<\/strong> recommended for campus PCs \/ University laptops, but can be installed on a personal laptop not owned by the University &#8211; <strong>requires Administrator password<\/strong> to install. If you do wish to do an administrator install, run the installer and follow any instructions.\n<ul class=\"nogaplist\">\n<li>This will put the MobaXterm Personal Edition icon on your dekstop (and in the Start Menu)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s it &#8211; the software is installed.<\/p>\n<h2>Running MobaXterm<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"gaplist\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol class=\"gaplist\">\n<li>Start <em>MobaXterm Personal Edition<\/em> either from\n<ul class=\"gaplist\">\n<li>the <code>MobaXterm_vX.Y<\/code> folder created when you extracted the <code>.zip<\/code> &#8211; launch the <code>MobaXterm_Personal_X.Y<\/code> application (if you used the <code>.zip<\/code> file)<\/li>\n<li>the Start menu (if you used the administrator installer)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hit the <em>Start local terminal<\/em> button in the main panel of the MobaXterm window:<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/csf3\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-start-local-button001.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1472\" src=\"http:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf3\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-start-local-button001.png\" alt=\"Start local terminal button\" width=\"198\" height=\"29\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n(If you do not see this button you have not installed MobaXterm correctly &#8211; the most likely issue is you have not <em>extracted<\/em> the <code>.zip<\/code> but instead have simply double-clicked on it to browse the contents of the <code>.zip<\/code> file. This is NOT a correct installation &#8211; see above.)<\/li>\n<li>The MobaXterm main window giving a linux shell on your local PC will start.Enter the <code>ssh<\/code> command (see image below):\n<pre>ssh <em>username<\/em>@submitter.itservices.manchester.ac.uk<\/pre>\n<p>to log in to Condor. Replace <code><em>username<\/em><\/code> with your central University username.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Enter your central University IT password when asked (<strong>characters will not appear on screen as you type them for security<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>You will be asked if you want to save your password in MobaXterm. We recommend you <strong>do not<\/strong> save your password for security<\/li>\n<li>You are now logged in to Condor&#8217;s login node.
