{"id":652,"date":"2021-07-14T09:58:57","date_gmt":"2021-07-14T08:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/?page_id=652"},"modified":"2021-07-14T10:27:43","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T09:27:43","slug":"windows","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/getting-started\/connecting\/windows\/","title":{"rendered":"Logging in from Windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All logins to the CSF4 must be done with an <em>SSH<\/em> (secure shell) app. On Windows we highly recommend the free MobaXterm program, from Mobatek, (installation instructions given below) which provides everything needed to login to the CSF, run graphical programs and transfer files. It replaces the separate PuTTY, Xming and WinSCP programs we used to recommend.<\/p>\n<p>Installation of MobaXterm is quick and simple and you <strong>do not<\/strong> require administrator access to your PC (simply download and <em>extract<\/em> a <code>.zip<\/code> file). <\/p>\n<p><strong>07.07.2021 &#8211; Note for users who already have mobaxterm installed<\/strong> &#8211; following reports of an issue with the left hand file browser pane of mobaxterm we have updated this documentation and now recommend that you use a saved SSH session to make your connection to the CSF4. Please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/getting-started\/connecting\/windows\/#Running_MobaXterm\">Running Mobaxterm section<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Please follow the steps below.<\/p>\n<h2>Download and Install MobaXterm<\/h2>\n<p>Please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/mobaxterm.mobatek.net\/download-home-edition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MobaXterm download page<\/a> and download <strong>one<\/strong> of the following packages:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"gaplist\">\n<li>MobaXterm Home Edition (<span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><strong>portable edition<\/strong><\/span>) &#8211; <strong>THE portable edition IS RECOMMENDED<\/strong> &#8211; it is a <code>.zip<\/code> file which can be unpacked anywhere <strong>without needing the Administrator password<\/strong> (ideal for your P-Drive for example).\n<ol class=\"gaplist\">\n<li><em>Right-click<\/em> on the downloaded <code>.zip<\/code> file<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-zip-extract-red.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-zip-extract-red.png\" alt=\"Right click on the image and select Extract all...\" width=\"390\" height=\"132\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-zip-extract-red.png 390w, https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-zip-extract-red-300x102.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Select <em><strong>Extract all&#8230;<\/strong> <\/em><br \/>\n(note, you <em>must<\/em> do an Extract all&#8230;, simply double-clicking on the <code>.zip<\/code> file to browse the content will <em>not<\/em> install the software correctly!)<\/li>\n<li>This will create a <code>MobaXterm_v<em>X.Y<\/em><\/code> folder containing the software (the <em>X.Y<\/em> numbers will change depending on the current version downloaded). <strong>Make a note of where this folder is<\/strong> (your Desktop? Your P-Drive? Your <em>Downloads<\/em> folder?)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>MobaXterm Home Edition (<span style=\"color: #00aa00;\"><strong>installer edition<\/strong><\/span>) &#8211; <strong>NOT<\/strong> recommended for campus PCs \/ University laptops, but can be installed on a personal laptop not owned by the University &#8211; <strong>it requires the Administrator password<\/strong> to install. If you do wish to do an administrator install, run the installer and follow any instructions.\n<ul class=\"nogaplist\">\n<li>This will put the MobaXterm Personal Edition icon on your dekstop (and in the Start Menu)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s it &#8211; the software is installed.<\/p>\n<h2>Running MobaXterm<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"gaplist\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol class=\"gaplist\">\n<li>Start <em>MobaXterm Personal Edition<\/em> either from\n<ul class=\"gaplist\">\n<li>the <code>MobaXterm_vX.Y<\/code> directory created when you unzipped the <code>.zip<\/code> file &#8211; double-click the <code>MobaXterm_Personal_X.Y<\/code> application (if you used the <strong>portable edition<\/strong> .zip file)<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-csf4-executable-red.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-csf4-executable-red.png\" alt=\"Double-click the mobaxterm executable to run it\" width=\"500\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-csf4-executable-red.png 757w, https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-csf4-executable-red-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 757px) 100vw, 757px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>or the Start menu (if you used the <strong>installer edition<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Select the &#8220;Session&#8221; button in the top left of the MobaXterm window:<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh.jpg\" alt=\"Click the session button\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh.jpg 941w, https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh-768x438.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 941px) 100vw, 941px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Select the &#8220;SSH&#8221; button in the top left. Enter your central University IT password when asked (<strong>characters will NOT appear on screen as you type them, for security, so please type carefully &#8211; MobaXterm IS receiving characters from the keyboard!!<\/strong>). If you are connecting from ON-CAMPUS you will also need to authenticate with your 2FA device.\n<p>If you use the Duo mobile app as your 2FA device, Enter &#8216;1&#8217; at the prompt and press Enter. Once the push notification has been received via the Duo mobile app &#8216;Approve&#8217; the request in order to log on.<\/li>\n<pre>Enter a passcode or select one of the following options: \r\n\r\n1. Duo Push to +XX XXXX XXX555\r\n\r\nPasscode or option (1-1):1\r\n<\/pre>\n<p><strong>OR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you use a Duo fob as your 2FA device, generate a passcode with the fob, type the passcode at the prompt and press Enter<\/p>\n<pre>Password:\r\nDuo two-factor login for <em>username<\/em>\r\n\r\nPasscode: 123456\r\n<\/pre>\n<h4><b>Off-campus<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>If logging in from off-campus you will first need to be connected to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/vpn\">University VPN (GlobalProtect)<\/a> &#8211; You may already connect to the University VPN in order to access your email.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>University <em>managed<\/em> laptops already have the GlobalProtect software installed. You can also download it and run it on your home PC\/laptop.<\/li>\n<li>If not already installed, please install the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/ourservices\/popular\/vpn\/\">IT Services VPN Software (GlobalProtect)<\/a> on your home PC\/laptop.<\/li>\n<li>This facility is provided by IT Services (not Research IT). Requests for help with the VPN and\/or GlobalProtect should be made to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/help\/\">via the Support Portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<li>If you see an error:\n<pre>_ssh: Could not resolve hostname csf4.itservices.manchester.ac.uk: Name or service not known<\/pre>\n<p>then your home ISP is very likely preventing the <code>csf4.itservices....<\/code> name from being converted to IP numbers (BT Internet has this problem). This is because the CSF uses <em>private<\/em> <code>10.99....<\/code> IP numbers. Usually, when you are signed in to GlobalProtect, these <em>private<\/em> numbers (private to the University campus) then become available but not all ISPs allow this to work. It is not a problem with the CSF or GlobalProtect.<\/p>\n<p>The solution is to use the CSF IP numbers directly.  Use one of the following in the Remote Host field:<\/p>\n<pre>\r\n10.99.203.214\r\nOR\r\n10.99.203.215\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>You will be asked if you want to save your password in MobaXterm. We recommend you <strong>do not<\/strong> save your password for security<a href=\"\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh-password-no-save-csf4-red.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh-password-no-save-csf4-red.png\" alt=\"Press No to prevent mobaxterm saving your password\" width=\"601\" height=\"205\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh-password-no-save-csf4-red.png 601w, https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/mobaxterm-ssh-password-no-save-csf4-red-300x102.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>You are now logged in to CSF4&#8217;s login node. Linux commands can be run as normal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>To run GUI apps on the CSF<\/h2>\n<p>If you intend to use GUI programs on the CSF (e.g., <a href=\"\/csf4\/software\/applications\/gedit\/\">gedit<\/a> which is a simple text editor similar to Notepad on Windows, or more complex applications <a href=\"\/csf4\/batch\/srun\/\">interactively in the batch system<\/a>) then you don&#8217;t need to do anything further &#8211; this all works by default when using MobaXterm.
