{"id":2265,"date":"2019-02-12T15:49:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T15:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf3\/?page_id=2265"},"modified":"2024-04-23T12:41:16","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T11:41:16","slug":"backup","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ri.itservices.manchester.ac.uk\/csf3\/filesystems\/backup\/","title":{"rendered":"Backup and Restore"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Home and RDS areas<\/h2>\n<h3>Backups<\/h3>\n<p><em>Isilon<\/em> filesystems &#8211; home directories and any additional <em>Research Data Storage<\/em> areas you may have access to &#8211; are backed up as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Snapshots (backups) are taken <em>every<\/em> hour, at half-past the hour, and kept for 24 hours<\/li>\n<li>After 24-hours, a daily backup, taken at half-past midnight, is kept for 35 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"warning\"><strong>Please note:<\/strong> the <em>scratch<\/em> filesystem is <strong>NOT<\/strong> backed-up. It is NOT possible to recover files deleted from scratch!<\/div>\n<h3>Recovery<\/h3>\n<p><strong>You can recover <em>home<\/em> and <em>Research Data Storage<\/em> files yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, if you delete a file or folder, or make an unwanted change to a file, or overwrite it accidentally.<\/p>\n<p>Every directory on isilon (e.g., in your <em>home<\/em> directory) has a <em>hidden<\/em> directory called <code>.snapshot<\/code> &#8211; move in to that directory and you will see directories for various dates and times (see below). Choose the one closest to before you deleted the file, and then you should be able to find a copy of the file you have deleted. You can then copy that file back to your home directory.<\/p>\n<p>For example, to access the <code>.snapshot<\/code> (backup) area in your home directory (or any other sub-folder in your <em>home<\/em> or RDS storage):<\/p>\n<pre>\r\ncd .snapshot\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Have a look at the list of backups:<\/p>\n<pre>\r\nls -1\r\nReynolds_NONFAC_NFS_<span class=\"sge\">24hr<\/span>_2019-02-11_<strong>15-30-00<\/strong>          # These are the <strong>hourly<\/strong> backups.\r\nReynolds_NONFAC_NFS_<span class=\"sge\">24hr<\/span>_2019-02-11_<strong>16-30-00<\/strong>          # Each backup is made at 30 minutes past\r\n...                                                   # the hour. There are 35-days worth\r\nReynolds_NONFAC_NFS_<span class=\"module\">28days_<\/span><strong>2019-02-12<\/strong>_00-30-00        # (despite the 28days in the name!)\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Choose a backup directory that is <em>just before<\/em> the date and time where you deleted (or damaged) the file or folder you wish to restore. For example:<\/p>\n<p>Suppose we wish to restore a folder named <code>mywork<\/code> we accidentally deleted earlier today at about 11am. We will use the 24-hour backup taken at 10:30am to restore from:<\/p>\n<pre>\r\n# Go in to the backup folder (today's 10.30am backup in our example)\r\ncd Reynolds_NONFAC_NFS_<span class=\"sge\">24hr<\/span>_2019-02-12_<strong>10-30-00<\/strong>\r\n\r\n# Check that the files\/folders you wish to restore are in this backup folder\r\n# (if not, go to an earlier backup folder in the list of folders)\r\nls mywork\r\n\r\n# Copy the entire \"mywork\" folder back to the directory where it was originally\r\n# (the ..\/.. means go up two levels. Remember, we are now in .snapshot\/Reynolds_NONFAC_NFS..<em>some_data<\/em>)\r\nrsync -av mywork ..\/..\r\n\r\n# Suppose you want to recover just some files - e.g., all the .dat files - back to where they were:\r\nrsync -av *.dat ..\/..\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>A big advantage of isilon is that if you only created the files an hour or two before you deleted it there is a high chance of getting it back.<\/p>\n<p>If the deletion occurred longer than 35 days ago, but you perhaps did not notice it had happened, then it will <em>not<\/em> be possible to recover the file.<\/p>\n<h2>Scratch<\/h2>\n<p>It is <strong>NOT<\/strong> possible to recover files from the scratch filesystem.
